A Look at Common Phrases and Misconceptions on Food Labels

We have all taken the time to look at food labels and may have been duped by common lies lying within. The food industry is a smart entity and through the years have been caught in some pretty substantial lies. If you have ever wondered about food labels and the wording therein, here is what you need to know about common phrases and misconceptions associated with these labels.

Fat Free or Low Fat

This is one of the biggest lies in the food industry and we have all likely fell for it. Fat free and low fat products do have the fat removed or diminished, but if you ask any chef, fat is flavor. Removing the fat means taking out the flavor profiles people love. Low fat and fat free foods do not always have the best flavor, so clever manufacturers add in sugars and salts to mimic the flavor you want. When you compare labels, you often that the fat free and low fat options actually have more calories due to additives.

Trans Fat Free

Trans fats are now considered to be something nightmares are made of, so to offset the fact that so many consumers are frightened beyond measure of trans fats, manufacturers have begun putting trans fat free labels on their products. The truth is, that as long as the company maintains less than .5 grams of trans fats per serving, they can put trans fat free on the label. You are likely still getting trans fats, just in smaller doses. To avoid the potential for trans fats completely, avoid any label with the word hydrogenated.

Evaporated Cane Juice

Remember many years ago when the use of high fructose corn syrup began to be frowned upon. Quickly manufacturers began eliminating this harmful sugar from everything they sold, but did they really. Manufacturers are crafty and they did not actually completely do away with high fructose corn syrup. They just changed the name to evaporated cane sugar. Sugar is sugar and too much is a bad thing period, no matter what they choose to call it.

All Processed Foods Are Bad

This one is huge today. Processed foods are now considered to be a big problem in the food industry. Consumers want to eat healthier and processed foods are to be avoided. Where it is true highly processed food that have no nutritional value are not healthy to consume in large doses, the general word, “processing” should not be considered as a negative.
